Every week we are AMAZED by the stories Julia reads and how they connect to the writing program in second grade. Our class is very fortunate to have her expertise (as our retired school librarian) and support during the writing blocks on Mondays.
This past week Julia shared a few folktales and we talked about the "author's purpose" as well as how folktales change over time.
What is a biography? A biography is a story written about a person and that person's life!
The children read several biographies and then completed a biography cereal box project on a person of their own choice. After exploring time lines, character traits, important accomplishments and writing summary paragraphs...the grade level met "Helen Keller" in a presentation.
The children ALL read in the Journeys Book about Helen Keller, watched the movie called, The Miracle Worker, and learned all about Annie Sullivan. On February 13, the second graders met an actor who portrayed Helen Keller. It was amazing to see!
